Poem: December

It feels like forever, wintry December;
The very wind seems clothed in frost
It came again, a start at year’s end
But, dear God, at what cost?

I know it’s not forever, endless December,
That the snow will eventually fade;
But I’m wracked with trembling, and night is descending—
Have I hopelessly lost the warmth I crave?

The frost tastes of forever this December,
Of an eternity spent in the cold
My heart fills with the fear that the New Year
Will see more ice seeping into my soul.
